Yes you can fly British, French, German and Israeli aircraft in the included campaigns, but all the voices are American. The other major criticism from me is all the voices are American. The E-2 Hawkeye controller in SF2:NA has also been criticised for sounding like a yokel. This is a BIG minus in my opinion as once in combat you rely on reports from your wingmen to alert you to enemy fighters, missle launches, etc. They are terribly over acted and way over the top in a very bad and very cheesy way. The major complaint I have about the sound is the voice recordings used for radio comms. It won’t blow your socks off but once again, it gets the job done.

It wasn’t long before someone made a mod that transformed the Iceland terrain back to the old terrain format. Not only did it look awful it also brought most peoples’ computers to their knees. TK added a new terrain engine in SF2:NA for the Iceland terrain but it was something of a damp squib. Background music consists of various electric guitar riffs that are a nice homage to the flight sims of yore. There’s no flashy animations, just simple menus on static background images. The only way I can describe SF2’s interface is “old school”.

This makes it very easy to run various mods side by side without them clashing.Įnough background.
#STRIKE FIGHTERS 2 VIETNAM REVIEW SERIES#
One of the important new features of the SF2 series was the ability to run mods from within separate folders (very similar to what can be done with M2TW). Here you can find a large repository of modifications, the highlights of which are the large mod packs which introduce dozens of new aircraft, objects, theatres and campaigns into the sim. Probably the biggest and most active site for modding the SF series is Combat Ace. The sim has a very active modding community who are continually releasing new aircraft, theatres and campaigns for the sim. It would be fair to say this probably saved the sim from falling into obscurity after the disastrous release of the original SF1. Over the coming years TW expanded on SF2 with the Vietnam, Europe, Isreal and North Atlantic titles.Įarlier on I mentioned that SF2 is an open architecture flight sim. The SF1 series had problems running on Vista and Windows 7, so in 2008 TW released SF2 which was fully compatible with Vista/W7 and featured a slew of improvements and refinements over the SF1 series. These are now known as the Strike Fighters 1 or SF1 series.

TK stuck with it and slowly improved the sim and released expansios called Wings Over Vietnam, Wings Over Europe and Wings Over Israel. However, the title showed much promise and potential. It was clearly unfinished and rushed to release. Strike Fighters: Project 1 was released in 2002 and was met with very harsh criticism. With the demise of big publisher backed flight sims at the turn of the century TK left Microprose and set up Third Wire to pursue his desire to create a Cold War jet flight sim. In fact you could say that SF2 is very much the spiritual successor to EAW. TK was a lead developer at Microprose back in the glory days of flight sims back in the 1990’s and played a major role in bringing us the classic title European Air War. SF2 is the brainchild of Tsuyoshi Kawahito (known to the SF2 community as “TK”). For example the Meteor F.8 of Expansion Pack 1 will now be available to fly in the 1956 Europe campaign from Expansion Pack 2. If you run a merged installation of all the SF2 titles you will get the relevant aircraft available in the relevant campaigns, much of the content crossing over. They are however, very reasonably priced. These DLC aircraft are variations of the existing aircraft so don’t expect anything totally new. In addition to all of the above TW also operate a DLC Store where you can purchase additional aircraft. The player is given the choice of flying several campaigns spanning from the 1950’s through to the 1970’s. “Dhimar” – a US ally is attacked by the Soviet backed “Paran”. The first title in the series features a conflict between two fictitious Cold War proxies in the Middle East. The SF2 series consists of several titles which can be installed as standalone, or into a single merged installation to give you access to all the theatres, campaigns and aircraft.

It is meant to be far more accessible and easy to learn, and dare I say it – more fun – than some of the more heavyweight flight sim titles.

In other words it features a number of aircraft modelled in less detail and fidelity than a “study sim” such as the classic Falcon 4, or the current heavyweight Digital Combat Simulator series. SF2 is what flight sim enthusiasts refer to as a “survey sim”. Strike Fighters 2 (henceforth abbreviated to SF2) by Third Wire (TW) is an open architecture, modular series of flight sims featuring aerial combat with Cold War era jet aircraft.
